Lincoln County sits west of Gaston County and southwest of Iredell County, bordering Catawba County to the north. The county has historically had an industrial and agricultural character centered on Lincolnton, but the Denver area along the western shore of Lake Norman has emerged as one of the fastest-growing residential communities in the greater Charlotte metro.
US-321 is the county's primary commercial corridor, running through Lincolnton and providing the main connection to Gastonia and Charlotte to the south and to Hickory and the foothills to the north. The road carries significant freight and commuter traffic and is among the most crash-active corridors in the county.
NC-16 is the other major corridor, running roughly north-south through the Denver area and connecting western Iredell County to Mecklenburg County. As Denver's population has grown, NC-16 has become increasingly congested — particularly in the section between Denver and Catawba County where two-lane stretches carry volumes far beyond their design capacity.
